Notes on managing with paper or Excel

  • Paper and spreadsheets do not remind you as a renewal date approaches, so it is easy to miss the right moment to cancel.
  • Every time an amount changes or a price goes up, you have to recalculate the totals by hand.
  • Without a habit of revisiting the sheet, it tends to sit untouched after you fill it in, so it rarely leads to an actual review.
  • When monthly and yearly plans are mixed together, working out the true annual cost takes manual conversion.

Why an app makes it easier

  • It automatically totals the monthly and yearly cost of the subscriptions you add, so you can see the full picture of your recurring expenses at a glance.
  • It sends a notification as a renewal date approaches, so you are less likely to miss the moment to review or cancel.
  • It helps you organize the basis for keeping or canceling a service using its usage frequency and cost per use.
  • Your records stay together on your device, so you can keep reviewing without rewriting the sheet or redoing the math.
