Why We Build Small Apps

Open the App Store and you will find it overflowing with feature-rich apps that can do all sorts of things. They look convenient at a glance, but once you actually start using one, have you ever found yourself wondering, where is the thing I actually wanted to do?

Rather than packing in lots of features, Pomeranian Studio deliberately builds small apps that solve one problem lightly. In this post, we want to share why this way of thinking matters so much to us.

Why We Build Small

Every time you add one more feature to an app, another button appears on the screen, another setting shows up, and there is a little more to remember. It may feel convenient at first, but before you know it the app ends up sitting unused, never quite mastered.

We start by deciding just one thing: what problem is this app here to solve. Maybe it is recording your daily coffee without any fuss. Quietly keeping track of the ups and downs of your energy. Organizing the capsule toys you have collected. Because we narrow down what the app does, the screen tells you what to do the moment you open it.

Building small does not mean cutting features and asking you to make do. It is a choice to focus on a single purpose, so that this one purpose, at least, is fulfilled properly and pleasantly.

  • Narrow down to one problem worth solving
  • Make a screen that shows what to do the moment you open it
  • Avoid adding more to remember

Designing So Recording Sticks

For recording apps, the hardest part is not the features but keeping it going. No matter how capable an app is, if entering things is a hassle, you will quit within a few days. And if it does not stick, the app might as well never have existed.

So we put reducing the number of steps to enter something above everything else. You do not have to fill in every field perfectly. You can add more later. You can leave just a single line for today. We try to leave room so you can keep going, even loosely.

The day you recorded everything and the day you left only a single line both pile up in exactly the same way. We believe that accumulation becomes a small joy when you look back on it later.

What It Means to Stay Close to the People Who Use It

The apps we build get used in everyday life, in hobbies, and in small moments of work. That is exactly why we never want to inflate expectations with grand words, or build in mechanisms that make you more anxious the more you use them.

Rather than dazzling you with flashy features, we want you to feel that it is just right every time you open it. To be quietly useful again today. That is the shape we are aiming for. It may be plain, but because it is something you do every day, we believe that plainness leads to the kind of ease that lasts.

A small app is also the right size for us as the people building it, a size where we can attend carefully to one thing. We want to keep raising small tools that stay close to a single problem, with care.
